Gradual diffusive capture: slow death by many mosquito bites
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study the dynamics of a single diffusing particle (a ‘man’) with diffusivity DM that is attacked by another diffusing particle (a ‘mosquito’) with fixed diffusivity Dm. Each time the mosquito meets and bites the man, the diffusivity of the man is reduced by a fixed amount, while the diffusivity of the mosquito is unchanged. The mosquito is also displaced by a small distance ±a with respect to the man after each encounter. The man is defined as dead when DM reaches zero. At the moment when the man dies, his probability distribution of displacements x is given by a Cauchy form, which asymptotically decays as x−2, while the distribution of times t when the man dies decays asymptotically as t−3/2, which has the same form as the one-dimensional first-passage probability.

Basophil activation by mosquito extracts in patients with hypersensitivity to mosquito bites
Hypersensitivity to mosquito bites (HMB) is a cutaneous disorder belonging to the group of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated T/natural killer (NK)-cell lymphoproliferative diseases, and is primarily mediated by EBV-infected NK cells. It is characterized by intense local skin reactions accompanied by general symptoms after mosquito bites, and infiltration of EBV-infected NK cells into the bite...

Background. The worldwide threat of arthropod transmitted diseased, with their associated morbidity and mortality, underscores the need for effective insect repellents. Multiple chemical, botanical, and “alternative” repellent products are marketed to consumers. We sought to determine which products available in the United States provide reliable and prolonged complete protection from mosquito ...

While probing host skin to search for blood vessels, the female Anopheles mosquito delivers Plasmodium parasites in the presence of saliva. Saliva from various blood-feeding vectors which contains several pharmacologically active components is believed to facilitate blood feeding as well as parasite transmission to the host. Recently, we found that mosquito saliva has the capacity to activate d...

Mosquito bites should be avoided because of the risk of contracting parasitic and viral diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and several encephalitides. Although humans have been said to suffer more mosquito bites after ingesting liquor, little is known about whether that is true. Thirteen volunteers (12 men from 20 to 58 years old and a 24-year-old woman) were chosen as test hosts and a 30-...
